I haven't seen this discussed before so I would like to know what you all
think.

I grew up hearing that I had been a "Celiac Baby" (along with 2 of my 4
siblings). As an infant my older sister had severe diarrhea and it took a
fair amount of time before she was diagnosed as celiac. I (and my younger
brother) also had the same kind of problems but since my parents had already
dealt with my sisters problems they were able to quckly get us started on a
treatment.

The treatment was a diet of bananas and rice pablum for 1 year, after which
we were supposedly cured.

My sister continued to have digestive problems throughout her life, but both
me and my brother seemed to be fairly healthy through early adulthood. I am
now 43 years old, and I began having digestive problems about 5 years ago.
I'm now on a gluten free diet and feeling a lot better. My brother is 5
years younger than me and still seems to be having no problems with gluten.

I've learned a lot through reading this list and the resources on the
internet. The consensus is that there is no "cure" for celiac disease. Has
the thinking changed since the 40's and 50's? Back then the doctors
definitely thought that babies could be cured through this very restricted
diet of bananas and rice pablum. BTW I was left with a life-long aversion
to bananas - I can't even stand the smell of them - they don't bother my
brother or sister though.

I would appreciate any thoughts you have about this.
