If you want the convenience of microwave popcorn but are concerned
about the ingredients, you might like to know that there is at
least one microwave popcorn available with nothing BUT popcorn in it!
I got a couple of boxes of "Pop-Lite" "organically grown microwave
popcorn, no salt, no fat added, no heat susceptors" from Walnut
Acres (1-800-433-3998 for orders or questions, fax 1-717-837-1146).
They were Item #83944 in their mail order catalog, you might be
able to find them in "health food" type stores or food co-ops also.
They didn't seem to be more expensive than other types (I got
two boxes for $5.99 with shipping, so local sources would be
cheaper of course; three bags to a box). It's put out by
Glacial Ridge Foods, Starbuck MN 56381.
According to the bag, heat susceptors (not used in this brand,
but in other types) are metallized plastic film strips that help
heat foods, some of the chemicals in the plastic might migrate
to the popcorn and so some folks might have trouble with that.
They've added more popcorn to compensate for the higher number
of unpopped kernels that you will get without the susceptors.
You can also get a glass popcorn popper that seems easy enough
to use, and if you only put plain popcorn into it there wouldn't
be any big cleanup hassle. (This is for the microwave, of course.)
