I have no comments regarding the Zone and GI, but I *did* want to comment:

> Beware fad diets!

'tis true.

But, while not a proponent of The Zone, I don't really consider it a "fad".
"Fad" has too much of a negative connotation to me, often indicating some
kind of bizarre dieting technique (all cabbage or all grapefruit, et al).

Just 'cause The Zone is popular I wouldn't call it a "fad diet".

> The reason people lose weight on the zone diet is because calories are
> severely restricted.

Well, yes and no, IMHO.
I believe that the overall allowed calories on The Zone is indeed too low.
However, I believe the nutrient percentages (40% carbs, 30% protein, 30% fat)
is a *major* step in the right direction.

We in this country eat *way* too many carbs.
And, unfortunately, they're usually the wrong kind of carbs.

0 fat, low protein, hi carb diets are *pure* BS!
The only thing you'll do on 'em is get fat.

Too many people have a fear of fat.
The fact is: you *need* fat in your diet.

3 problems I have with the Zone are:

1. Overall calories are too low.
2. I prefer higher protein, lower carbs than even the Zone.
E.g. my diet is 50-60% protein, 20-30% carbs, 20% fat.
3. I *don't* agree w/ Sear's recommendations of eating fruit.
Fruit is sugar. Sugar has a high glycemic index. You get fat.

> To lose weight, calorie control and exercise are the key.

Amen.
Can't stress how important it is to exercise - every day.
Calorie restriction *alone* is a very, very bad way to diet.

Bye
Ron
