Hello All,
I am one of those "between the cracks" Celiacs (haha, not trying to be
poetic!). I am sero-negative on most tests, biopsy negative too. Just positive for
non-Celiac gluten sensitivity via Enterolab's stool test. So for the last 6
years since finding out, I have been fairly diligent with my diet, and
feeling pretty good. However, I have had a few small outbreaks of Dermatitis
Herpetiformis over the last 20 years, which, in retrospect, always followed either
a gluten exposure or excessive seafood consumption. or both. I'm pretty
careful about not eating more than a few shrimp now and then, which usually
presents no problem. I have not had any DH in several years. But this week I have
erupted with the worst outbreak of DH I have ever had. (I'm thinking an
overload of stress may have contributed to this as well). It is on my rear end,
into sensitive areas as well, and causing me no end of misery. My doctor (not a
specialist) is aware of Dapsone but doesn't want me taking it, due to
dangerous side effects. He knew of nothing else that would help. I do not have
access to any other specialists.
I did some research, but turned up nothing else myself. Does anyone have any
suggestions for some symptomatic relief, until my body just works through
this? Are there any topical creams, either OTC or Rx that can help? A friend
who has Lupus suggested Plaquenil, since it is used for other autoimmune
conditions. I couldn't dig up any information as far as this being used for DH.
Any help at all, greatly appreciated. I will be happy to summarize. And,
yes, I've learned my lesson, and will be even more diligent with my diet. I do
not EVER want another attack like this one I am enduring now! (I have not
changed anything as far as supplements, soaps, clothes, etc. and I take no
medications. I'm sure this is a result of a dietary indiscretion.)
Thank you.
