Hi All,
In a recent discussion with a fellow celiac and list member, I realized
that I should send a post to the list about a singularly powerful movie
experience. Watching the movie "Lorenzo's Oil" was a very moving experience
for both of us. If you have a couple of hours that you can set aside to
watch this show, I think you will find it a very worthwhile investment of
your time.

It is a true story about the importance of being an informed consumer of
medical care. It explores questions about how much responsibility we should
and/or must take for our own medical care, as seen through the experience
of the parents of a boy with adrenoleukodystrophy. This is a deadly disease
in which the myelin sheath on nerve axons is systematically destroyed,
leading to rapidly decreasing levels of mental competence, physical
coordination and mobility. It is like a childhood version of rapidly
progressive multiple sclerosis.

This story suggests, to me, the importance of doing our own research, and
being critical thinkers about the medical advice we get. The movie depicts
some of the problems that arise out of blind obiesance to the medical
profession.... an important message all by itself, but there is more.

Lorenzo's Oil stars Susan Sarandon, Nick Nolte, and Peter Ustinov, and has
an important message for the parents of celiac children, and for health
care consumers in general.

best wishes,
