The Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act (FALCPA) signed into law in the U.S., in August 2004, requires the FDA to develop rules for the labeling of 'gluten-free' foods.

Those proposed rules are due to be issued by the FDA in August 2006, just 2 months away. The public will have the opportunity to provide comments on this proposal. The law also requires that they become final, and to into effect by August 2008.

It is important to note that these rules will not require any manufacturer to label products as gluten-free. However, those that want to put 'gluten-free' on their label will have to comply with whatever the new rules are. Companies shipping products to the U.S. will also be required to comply with the [yet to be determined] standard, too.
