Thanks to all who responded. I had over 30 responses. MSG is gluten free
but as most of you may know it can cause lots of trouble for people who may
be sensitive. Some of the symptoms people said they got were headaches and
stomach cramps and bloating. I was told by one person to go to
www.truthinlabeling.org for some good information on MSG, it offered a lot.
Here are some of the responses I received that had a little extra info.

1. My son, now 30, get GI upset from both. He also doesn't do well with
lactose, but will opt for lactose rather than MSG when options are
limited...Better than Bouillon has lactose but no msg...

Interesting site at www.truthinlabeling.org Technically they call all
hydrolyzed proteins MSG (mono-sodium glutamate has a different chemical than
sodium caseinate from milk), they all have the potential to bother sensitive
individuals.

The structure of Splenda is different--a non-absorbable sugar rather than a
protein, I believe. The only non-Nutrasweet diet soda by RC cola & their
other flavors.

2. In the USA it is gluten free. In a Chinese Restaurant, be careful, it
has gluten in it.

3. I asked this question of the list about 6 or 8 months ago, and got no
satisfactory answer. I hope you do!

I will tell you that this is what I learned, both from others on the list
and my own research. All very inconclusive.

MSG that is manufactured in the U.S. never comes from gluten, by law
apparently. When MSG is manufactured anywhere else, including Asia, it
might or might not be derived from gluten sources -- and there is no way to
determine or know "which" source it might come from, if it is not made the
U.S.

However, I could never pin down the ORIGINATION of the above statement, even
though the statement appears on virtually every celiac web site. No one has
been able to tell me where, specifically, this information came from in the
first place.

There is an additional bit of information out there, which is that some
manufacturers and scientists believe that the chemical process by which MSG
is made basically destroys any protein or gluten molecules, such that gluten
is no longer of any kind of concern, even if that was its original
derivation.

My own observations/experiences are that I have never gotten ill, or had
gluten reactions that I can determine, from eating anything containing MSG,
whether it comes from a U.S. or foreign manufacturer. But this is just ME
personally. I guess I'm led to think that either the MSG I ingest (even if
from foreign foods) is not derived from gluten, or else it is true that the
gluten molecule is destroyed in the chemical process of making MSG. But
there are plenty of people on this list who say they have gluten reactions
to eating foreign-produced MSG. I just don't.

I don't keep or use MSG for home cooking -- but it's pretty impossible to
avoid when eating out, or eating any processed foods (even made in the
U.S.). I also think it's got enough weird bad reactions associated with it,
that it's probably better to choose not to eat it whenever possible. I'm
quite sure my husband (who is not gluten sensitive) does have a reaction
when he consumes too much MSG.

4. MSG is g.f. in the US...while many have negative reactions to it, it's
not a gluten reaction.

It is chemically similar to Nutrasweet and those who can't do MSG probably
won't do well with Nutrasweet/aspartame either. My son don't tolerate
either!

Thanks Again, Christl in Maine
