Recently got back from 10 day trip to Calif., from NJ, and thought this
overview would provide useful info to those making similar excursion....

US Air's version of a gf meal was some kind of chicken on rice with
stringbeans, however, the chicken was browned, and the aluminum foil lid
wasn't attached. It looked just like everyone else's meal, with a very
unofficial "gf" written on top. As an open meal, it was also subject to
contamination. (I passed it up. The flight attendant suggested I order a
fruit meal next time.)

I had no problems eating bacon and eggs and homefries at Denney's in
Chula Vista, for 5 mornings. (Other than cholesterol and calories!) For
dinner, we went to an Italian restaurant in Chula Vista...D'Lish, where
the owner and chef went through great pains to make a great gf chicken
dish...and then I found a stray piece of fettucini in it. They gave me
my meal, what little I ate of it...free.

We also had two dinners at Love's Wood Pit BBQ (had steaks) at the Ramada
Inn. I don't know if it's a chain, but the steak, baked potatoes, and steamed
veggies were fine, as were the salads.

I also had a good meal at Anthony's Fish Grotto San Diego, next to the
Maritime Museum. Ordered the grilled fish. Vegetables and salad were fine.

Day trips:

SeaWorld in San Diego has tossed salad, fresh strawberry cup, sliced
watermelon. I had no trouble eating there.

San Diego Zoo....You must try Albert's at the top of the tree house, if
you're going without a crew of little kids. Fine dining in the heart of the
zoo, named after a gorilla. Welcomed respite. Their salads are huge. I didn't
try the food concessions, but food at the zoo seemed plentiful.

Thumbs down to the San Diego Wildlife Safari Park in Escondido. I
yearned for years to go there and loved the park itself, but the only
thing I found that I could eat was a baked potato (with the plainest
toppings...broccoli, onions) in the food concession nearest where you
get to feed the giraffes....and you can't do the park in half a day, so
bring food. And for a potato and soda, I paid more than $7.00.

Going up to San Francisco, we ate ...with great success and many calories...at
Frantoio's in Mill Valley...don't miss this place that has an olive oil mill
in the restaurant.  ph. 415-289-5777.It's expensive, but good.

Good experience at Frankie, Johnnie, and Luigi, Too (a chain of sorts).
Really neat...on a back street in Nappa Valley...after wine tasting.

And we loved The Fish Market in San Mateo....The selection for gf, if you
love fish, is seemingly endless, and despite the crowd, the waitstaff was
attentive.

Other than for the S.D. Wildlife Park, and on this particular airplane, the
only place I had trouble was at the airports.....due to security and lack of
business, some restaurants were unaccessible...behind security checks for
airlines we didn't have tix for...or were closed altogther. The only place I
could find food at San Fran. airport was in the international terminal...and
there was very little. US Air's concourse is all but shut down as far as
food. Bars and newstands seem to be open.

Phila. airport was fine. They have a great mall area and food court,
but....it's after you go through security and happened to be accessible to us
from US Air terminal.

San Diego Airport was smaller than I expected. I don't recall having much
success there.

I carried packets of nuts, gf breadsticks, and some gf cookies wherever I
went, and when we moved up to our motel in Mill Valley, wanting to avoid
another 5 days of bacon and eggs, I went to the Whole Foods Store and picked
up cereals. (For bowls and plastic spoons, I had to go to the nearby
Safeway.) I had a refrig in both S.D. and Mill Valley (north of S.F.), and
the former even had a microwave.

Hope this helps the folks who may be headed out west.
