Thanks to all who responded to my request for info on margaritas. Here
is a summary of all the responses I received--Good luck--Gerri

i get a reaction from frozen margaritas from the restuarant Chilis.
........................................................................

Some tequilas are (Cuervo Gold, or any made from 100% Agave are suppose
to be gluten free), but some of the cheaper ones may add coloring or
grain alcohol. Watch the mixes, many have modified food starch, which
can be from wheat.
........................................................................
I have never had a problem with margaritas, and they are
usually what I order if others are having mixed drinks. But
I understand that the golden (so-called) tequilas are not
necessarily gf, so stick with the silver. And ask whether the
tequila is made from 100% agave, as some have other
alcohols mixed in that may not be gf. Jose Cuervos and
Herradura (Yum!) are two gf brands. The Jose Cuervos
margarita mix is also gf, if you make your own. I saw those
brands listed on Scott Adams' websites' gf alcohol list :
http://www.celiac.com/products.html#Alcohol
He lists others, as well (his site is a mine of gf info!).

I don't have any other interest in those brands except to
drink them. Also, although I may not have a problem with
them--and I react pretty badly to non-gf drinks (I was foolish
enough to try some whiskey, because another celiac said
he drank scotch OK)--somebody else may have one.

I wouldn't trust a "pre-mixed" marguerita at all. White tequilas are
considered safe - When I want a marg. I make my own as follows: take a
little can of frozen limeade, don't thaw. Put in blender with ice, a
splash or two of orange juice, (maybe some fresh squeezed orange and a
little limes if available), tequila and ice. Blend. Its easy.

You have to interrogate the bartender. I had a wonderful margarita,
only to find out it was made with a powder mix that they put with other
ingredients. I managed to read the list of ingredients, and there were
several suspicious ones, like modified food starch and I dont really
remember what. This was told to me to be a fresh margarita, made from
scratch.

The next time I ordered one, I asked for the packet, and showed him what
I could not have and requested they really make it from "scratch"and he
did and it was fine. So you really need to know about the mixer. Even
at a fancy, expensive place.

Most tequilas will be gluten free. In theory, some may not be GF, as
carmal coloring may be added to some of them, but you can look for
specific words on the tequila bottle that will tell you if they are
gluten free or not.
