I have two small first degree relatives who are 4 and 7 , male and female
respectively. My sister has asked me to throw some symptoms out to those
on the group who might be able to help her decide how to now proceed. the
4 year old seems overactive and has an iron count of 8 (normal range
10-14). the 7 year has an iron count of 10 which is borderline. the GP
advised only that they take supplements. my sister is very health
conscious and these kids eat very nutritious meals and get a lot of
exercise. The 4 year old has episodes of tetany (muscle cramping) which I
got bigtime before I went GF. The 7 year old does not respond well to
Childrens Tylenol elixer in terms of bringing down a temperature but
responds to regular oral childrens tabs tylenol (the elixer brings down
the temp only after about 4 hours). I have asked her if she feels that
the 4 year old is unusually restless in comparison with others his age
and she thinks so. We are from Canada and the blood assay is not so
common up here as it is in the US and her GP told her it was still
experimental. The 7 year old is ,btw, allergic to red food dye which
would be found in the elixer but I doubt that would affect the efficacy
of the tylenol unless someone knows better than I about this. I have
advised her to do the following: (1) get a steatorrhea fecal fat test (2)
get a complete vitamin, albumin, and blood panel on the kids from the
same University hospital that did mine as vitamin tests are not available
in some of our regular labs that the GP's deal with (3) get herself and
the kids to my gastro who although is not a pediatric gastro is
considered the best in my area. If anyone can advise us on this problem
we would be most grateful as she and I are worried that the kids may be
CD but don't want to subject them to an unneccessary biopsy under a
general if this is avoidable. I might mention that the 4 year old has an
incredible appetite, both are normal weight, but why would the 4 year old
have such a low iron count? They are both energetic but so was I as a kid
and now I am a card carrying celiac. Any help would be appreciated from
those who have some experience in the area. If any cel-pros read this my
sister is a specialist in immune systems in her work and would like to
communicate directly with someone who can inform her of the actual
mechanisms as far as they are understood.
Sorry to be so long,
Thanks for listening,
Lisa P
