Hi, all! Sorry to take so long to summarize this info. I rec'd several
requests to do so as many were as curious as I am. My question was: Having
seen recent posts re: topical products that contained gluten, esp. nail
polish, should I be concerned with topical products even though I am not
diagnosed with DH -- only CD? Of the 33 responses I received, 100% said I
should be concerned with any products going on my lips and eyes. I'm
embarrassed to admit, it never occurred to me to be careful of these
products! Of course, now that I've read your posts and think about it, it's
obvious this is something to consider (esp. lipstick!). I'm still so new at
this -- and learning all the time! With regards to other topical products,
i.e. lotion, shampoo, soap the majority felt these are not items of concern
as the gluten molecule is too large to be absorbed through the skin.
However, on that same note, I was cautioned by many that you still must take
caution as these things can be "accidentally" ingested (shampoo runs down
into your mouth, lotion gets transferred from your hands to your mouth,
etc.). One post did state "because of wheat in my nail polish" she had
become very ill. I also learned through a post that I should be careful of
vitamin E in creams and cosmetic products. Wow! It can be mind boggling
sometimes when I realize everything it takes to truly be "Gluten-Free". And
here I've been, thinking I'm gluten-free and slathering on the lipstick and
gloss all day long. Guess I'd better go clean out the makeup drawer!
Thanks for all your help, I'm truly learning more and more each day. Debbie
