The Nov 1 issue of Women's Day Magazine has an article on auto immune
diseases "Enemy Within" wherein they list Celiac Sprue as one of the
more than 80 chronic AI conditions. They don't go into CD but they do
relate personal stories on 5 other AI diseases.
Interested statistics: "The symptoms can be relentless and painful,
baffling doctors. ...Roughly 50 million Americans suffer from
autoimmune diseases and 75% are women. ... Yet, despite their
prevalence and devastating impact, these illnesses are among the 'least
investigated, most difficult to diagnose and most physically and
emotionally painful diseases' that face American today. ...In one
study, more than 65% of patients in thh early stages of their illness
were labeled hypochondriacs. ... The average woman sees six physicians
over a 5-year period before being properly diagnosed. Thankfully, the
medical community has begun to pay more attention to this long-ignored
class of illness and has developed more and better treatment options."
Every little bit of publicity helps!
