We have wondered if there is a continuum of gluten insensitivity and that some
may not be antibody positive. Alternatively, perhaps on the GF diet, we
coincidentally have omitted something else, which when consumed in large
enough quantities results in fatique (e.g. MSG, who knows what else).

Being one of the other members who caught this from my child, I've
been thinking a lot about this very thing. I feel so much better on
a GF diet that I hardly care whether I'm "gluten-sensitive" or if I have
celiac. A few things have occurred to me, maybe something will make sense to
someone else.

o I'm eating much less refined carbohydrates and sugar, since the main
vehicle for sugar for me contains gluten (cookies, cakes, etc.). I feel
much less hungry between or at meals. I find fruit more satisfying.
So I'm thinking that there's a blood-sugar relationship between the
gluten-free diet and why I feel so much better.

o I'm eating many fewer sources of yeast. There might be a candida connection
for me. Many of the symptoms of candida and celiac overlap.

o While I definitely feel physically better, I won't discount the
psychological effect. Perhaps it's a placebo, maybe it's just so
uplifting to feel good, to not be afraid to get away from a bathroom,
to be able to stay awake for a meeting, to not be faced with the
choice of whether to eat dessert or not. . .

o I'm eating more whole foods and less pre-packaged, processed stuff.
Maybe I'm sensitive to food additives.

o It feels good to be able to take care of myself; to assert that if
something has gluten in it, I can't have it and to ask for alternatives.

So, besides my sensitivity to gluten, I think there are other possible
reasons why this diet works for me. I did a challenge this weekend and
still am recovering from the effects. Of course, I took advantage of
the situation to eat a slice of pizza (none of this 2 saltine crackers
stuff :) ). For me, the benefits are worth the inconveniences; whatever
the reason, it works.

Regards to all,
Julie
