Summary #2) some interesting test results

In a recent summary, we established the lower limit for gluten detection
to be between 3 ppm and 10 ppm depending on the lab and testing
equipment used.

In my first post about canola oil I said:

"I have what I believe to be a very reliable source telling me that
three samples of canola oil were recently  tested and found to contain
trace amounts of gluten. How is this possible? I'm wondering if anyone
has ever tested canola oil for gluten content."

Because in could not believe it myself, I called back and obtained more
details about the canola oil testing and yes, it did contain gluten in
the amounts of 11 and 15 ppm.

The general consensus in the celiac community is that canola oil is GF,
so if a specific canola oil was tested to have gluten in it, one or more
of the following are possible:
     -  the testing was not done in a clean environment and there was a
gluten source present
     -  the specific brand of canola oil was subject to cross
contamination
     -  the person conducting the test did not do it right

In this particular case, the canola oil must have been subject to cross
contamination because it was a clean sample taken from a freshly opened
container and it was professionally tested by an outside source.

My source noted that oil that is properly filtered should contain no
protein, hence no gluten.

More tests are currently being done in an attempt to determine the
source of the gluten in this sample of canola oil, and to determine if
all canola oil contains gluten or if just this batch contained gluten.
Additional testing is also being done on other oils such as
sunflower/safflower oil.

Please Note: This post does not say that canola always contains gluten.
It says that gluten was found in a sample of canola oil, and they do not
know why this particular sample of oil is contaminated.
