Hi folks.  Sorry for the delay in responding on the hoisin sauce issue.
I've been waiting for a reply from Lee Kum Kee which , after two
requests, has never come.  So forget them.  However, I found I had a
bottle of Dynasty's hoisin sauce on my shelf, so I contacted them.
Here's their response:

Yes, Dynasty Hoisin Sauce #09627 and Dynasty Plum Sauce #09630 are both
gluten free. If we can be of further assistance, please email us or call

I am sooooo happy to pass this along as I got more responses from y'all
about wanting to know what I found out than actual information about Lee
Kum Kee's version or any alternative.  I guess there are many hungry
hoisin fans out there.  Here's what the some had to say:

 I think I was involved in getting that list from them (Lee Kum Kee)
last year and when I called to ask specifically about the hoison sauce
it seemed to me that the sauce is somewhat mislabled. As I recall the
staff persons said that there was soy sauce in the product (not just
soybeans) so... You might want to try calling them but I have stayed
clear of it since then.

"Color added" means gluten to me.

The acetic acid (vinegar) may be derived from wheat??

I don't use it, but the places there that could possibly contain gluten
are: spices, acetic acid (if made in China), or color added. Or
practically any other of the ingredients if it carries gluten as a
secondary ingredient, since companies are not "required" to list
secondary ingredients. Reading the ingredients is never safe way to
assure yourself that something is GF.

I use Ka-Me Hoisin sauce and have no problems with it.  I received
confirmation from the company that it is indeed gluten free.

I've read on this list before that Dynasty brand hoisin is GF & my
daughter (7 years) has tried w/o any obvious symptoms.

I have never found a hoisin sauce that was GF. I cant remember f the
ingredient it was containing was modified food starch or wheat. I will
look for this brand locally and check it out because the list you said
here appears to be GF.

I have used this (Lee Kum Kee) hoisin sauce with no problem.  Hope the
rest of the list  agrees!

it could be the color that's the culprit.  Sometimes there's barley malt
in the color, I'm told.  Anyway, I'd be interested to know what you find
out about which hoison sauces are GF.  I also have a son with celiac and
would love to know more things I can give him.

So that's it.  I live in the southwest, but I bet you can find Dynasty
nationwide at most general groceries.  Eat in good health!  Joy
