Fall Meeting on Sunday, Oct 22nd at 2:00pm

"Nutrition, Food Labeling and Celiac Disease"

Shirley R. Blakely, Ph.D., R.D., a nutritionist with the Food & Drug
Administration's Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition where she
serves as the Associate Dean of the Staff College and has recently been
appointed as the Chief Dietitian of the U.S. Public Health Service
Commissioned Corps, will be the special guest speaker for our Fall meeting.
She was involved in crafting the regulations for the Nutrition Labeling and
Education Act of 1990 and has given a number of training classes on the use
of the new food label for special diets.

Prior to joining FDA, Dr. Blakely served as a faculty member of the College
of Medicine at Howard University and practiced dietetics. During her
practice, she counseled a number of patients in the selection of
gluten-restricted and gliadin-free diets and avoidance of foods which
contribute to worsening of the disease.

This informative lecture will give celiacs an opportunity to learn more
about food labeling, the role FDA plays and how to become an active voice in
future regulations.
