As I previously posted, our group recently had a wonderful presentation
by our supporting Gastroenterologist. With all the current discussions
of people either already diagnosed with Celiac by Biopsy, or those
presuming they have Celiac and planning another Biopsy, or gluten challenge,
I was not able to pin him down with a firm answer. I explained in particular
how parents with small children who received relief from the gluten-free
diet did not want to purposefully expose the children to such discomfort.
We do know that the villi change every three days, but he said the healing
in the small intestine starts distally, not proximally. So- there may
still be evidence of lesions right below the stomach. He said it all depended
on the degree of small intestine involvement to start out with. As I said,
he did not specifically say if it was necessary to eat gluten immediately
before the Biopsy.
The question also came up about oats. He talked about picturing
foods on a chart. Rice and corn (allowable foods), at the top, OATS are
around the middle, and wheat is at the bottom. He explained that maybe
that's why some people can tolerate it. Food for thought!
