I've read that GF licorice can be difficult to find, so I was pleased to
find that this is available at the Koglin deli in the Food Market at Grand
Central Station in New York City. A German manufacturer, Katjes Fassin,
produces small bits of licorice shaped like cats, which are called Katjes
Kinder. Although the company's website indicated that the source of starch
is not wheat, I was still curious about the status of the glucose syrup
used, so I emailed the company and received this reply, which appears to
indicate that the company's products meet the European standard, although
the product is not actually labeled as such. In case anyone wants to
investigate further, the company's website is www.katjes.de.

Dear Mr. Otto,

based on the Guidelines of the "Deutschen Gesellschaft f=FCr Z=F6liakie" our
product Katjes Kinder is "Gluten Free".

We do not use any wheat origin starch, but our Glucose Syrup is made from
Wheat and/or Corn, with a small rest of Gluten, and therefore the Gluten
content in Katjes Kinder is less than 200 ppm.

If you need further information, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Yours sincerely
K a t j e s Fassin
GmbH + Co. KG
