Thanks to all of you who responded - and especially to Katie for the reminder to BEWARE! As a new GF eater my excitement at actually being able to eat out needed to be tempered with caution! :)

As usual, there don't seem to be very many GF restaurants here in Canada as there are in the US but hopefully we'll hear about many more options in the near future!

I appreciate the info that I've rec'd on this board. I've printed out and read the EnteroLab and Dr. Fine info and plan to take it to the specialist that I will see next month. I did have a blood test but since I've been GF for 6 months, it showed negative (not sure what they tested). Any advice on what to ask/tell the specialist would be appreciated - I came upon this GF on my own after suffering from 'IBS' for years. So this is all from my own initiative. I've never felt better! Too bad it took until age 39 for this!

RESPONSES:

Hurray for Outback and hurray for us Celiacs that can eat out---BUT---beware
at Outback!! If you get a salad, you MUST make sure that the lettuce,
cheese and rest of the fixin's come from the cooler in the back!!! We
learned the hard way that the ENTIRE salad prep line is contaminated with
crouton crumbs because they only change gloves for the GF menu--meaning that
they have been reaching in the lettuce, cheese and tomato containers with a
glutinous crouton contaminated glove the whole night until a Celiac comes
along and they JUST change gloves. This is easily remedied by just talking
to your server and the manager. Outback is wonderfully understanding and
friendly!!! Katie

For Canadians in Ontario/Quebec:

The Table Restaurant (Vegetarian) in Ottawa offers Gluten-free Lasagna every friday .
It's a buffet-style restaurant, with an ingredient listing above the vaious dishes.

Il Fornelo with several locations including Toronto, Oakville, and Richmond Hill Ontario
offers Gluten-free Pizza and Gluten-free Pasta dishes.

Patisserie Fine Fidelice with two locations in Gatineau Quebec, always has available
a gluten-free cake (or smaller individual cakes) called Gateau Trinite (pronounced "Gaw-toe Tree-knee-Tay") with layers of flourless chocolate cake and layers of chocolate and vanilla cream. They transformed it into an amazing wedding cake for us.

Here are Toronto's places for GF dinning

http://www.geocities.com/glutenfreetoronto/restaurant_guide.html
Also beer and other links to GF products

'La Messagere', a rice/buckwheat beer from Quebec, has been
availble in LCBO stores since at least october of 2004. They are very
willing to stock it, if they don't normaly. Also the restaurant chain 'IL
FORNELO'(www.toronto.com) offers gluten free pasta, and pizza, and has several
locations in Toronto. 'Magic Oven' (www.magicoven.com) has two locations,
and makes the best thin-crust pizza I've ever had. I have had no reactions,
from any of the above products ever.

You probably already know this but just in case - Il Fornello in the GTA has gluten free pasta available and GF pizza crusts. They clearly mark their menu items as GF if so. And speaking from lots of personal experience, the food is excellent! What's nice is that it's a place that you can feel good about going with your non GF friends, family, etc.

Here's a link to their "alternate menu":

A link for locations is on the left side of the page, as you'll see.

Thanks for the Outback info, by the way - I go there when I'm in the US, now I can go here as well!

Could you summarize any other responses you get and post them? I'd really be interested in knowing what's out there as well (I was only diagnosed in May '05 so I'm sure there's a lot I haven't heard of yet)

Hi Dawn,
Thanks for the Outback info! I live in Ottawa, Ontario. A restaurant that
I eat at regularly is Swiss Chalet. They have a information pamphlet that
lists all the allergens in their menu dishes, and gluten is included in the
list of allergens.
Hope this helps! ~ judith :o)

OUTBACK RESPONSE:
Dawn:

Yes, we do have a gluten free menu available at all times! Whenever you
visit just mention to your server that you require one and we will be happy
to oblige.
