Dear Listserve Folks,
Thank you so much for the many replies.

Several ideas on abosorbing calcium. Antacids can be a bad source
because some acid is needed to absorb the calcium, but another person
mentioned that too much acid can limit absorbtion. Vitamins D, K, and
magnesium, in proper amounts, help with absorbtion. Limiting protein
(one person suggested 30g) can help. More than 400 mg or so at a time is
more than the body can absorb, so it is best to take calcium throughout
the day and with food. Hormone replacement was suggested, and pointed
out that this can be useful even before menopause if the hormones are
depleted due to CD. Onions and eating by blood type were suggested.
Non-dairy sources are soy, especially tofu and leafy greens. A good
suggestion for using the fortified juice is to either cut it with tonic
water or use it in cooking rice. Lactase helps some eat dairy, and
yogurt, aged cheddar (ie Cabot Sharp cheddar) and low-lactose dairy
products. Favorite supplements include caltrate, ciracal, solaray
cal-mg. Weight bearing exercise helps bones too.

Once again, thank you to all who responded. I am much better educated
now!

Elizabeth
