I started taking 1,000 mg per day. Yes, I got that strange irritable
gut feeling on the first day. The guy whose web-site I mentioned
said that people with food allergies can tolerate less vit. C. before
getting diarrhoea (what he calls the bowel tolerance level). But I
reasoned that the body may be in serious vit. C. depletion due to CD
related malabsorption, so I pressed on with the Vit C. doses (1 gram
is not an enormous dose anyway) and found that the gut irritation
receded on the second day.

I guess it is just gut sensitivity. The 'cleaning house' may come
later, as your vit. C levels increase significantly.
