Dear List Members,

I got 9 responses to my mailing dated 5/11/98:

The first recommendation was to take calcium supplement.

I was interested to note from on response similar experience of increased
depression taking clonodine. Another man in USA on Atenolol(I think is
called Ternormin) suspects Coeliacs have low BP generally.

Then there was someone on Zestril for Hypertension who found that OK,
warning particularly of Casein in Icecream and Tomatoes. Its funny though I
can eat tomatoes no problem but canned tomatoes are big problems.

Advice from Canada suggesting self monitoring of BP was interesting. I have
wondered about before. Psyche it down. Good one if I can replace the pill.

I also received advice on the unpleasant side of some BP prescriptions.

OK, I suspect that Catapres (Clonodine) is the culprit and through my GP
have a referral to a GE specialist. I am a male in mid 50s. A dietician has
suggested foods canned and processed can perform differently to those fresh
such as the experience with Tomatoes and icecream. In the meantime I am
maintaining the status quo by eating very plain and simple.

Thanks everybody for your kind suggestions, experiences and thoughts re my
initial posting as below.

"I suspect I am suffering from Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) in addition to
being a medically diagnosed Coeliac and eventhough I rigidly follow a GF
diet.

I take by prescription a small amount of Catapres (Clonodine) for
hypertension daily and which is Gluten Free. This I suspect is the cause.
I have been on this medication for some time (18 months perhaps) already and
lately(last 6 months say) I have had indigestion, tender feeling in the
stomach, Nausea, and severe depression with headache after consuming certain
safe foods.

I have become paranoid about food and only eat plane foods particularly
avoiding anything in a tin or bottle unless it is of singular ingredient. A
tin of spicy tomato proven gluten free upset me to the extent that I was
unable to perform my job and similarly ice cream. I am not intolerant to
lactose having no problem with milk products in basic form(not ice cream).
Are there any Gastro Enterologist members that have seen this before?
Are there any members suffering similarly on hypertensive treatments?"
