I was diagnosed a year ago and I have been doing very well on the diet. I
did not have stomach problems at all but I had various other auto immune
diseases because of celiac. The very first problem I really noticed was all
the symptoms that go along with hypocalcaemia which caused
hyper-parathyroidism. The parathyroid controls your calcium level in your
blood and if it is screwed up, it will cause all kinds of problems for your
whole body from too much calcium. Your calcium intake may be just fine but
your parathyroid does not read it correctly and tells your system to rob
calcium from your bones and such. Hypo-calcaemia is just the opposite...too
little calcium. Both of these conditions have been linked to Celiac disease.

Besides a lot of other problems, I really noticed a big problem with my
head. I read that many people who have celiac and have neurological
symptoms, do not present normally, like stomach and diarrhea problems and
often this is the only symptoms they are aware of. I have ADD now (didn't
before) and a horrible time with short term memory and spaciness. After two
years of this becoming worse and worse, I was finally diagnosed with the
hyper-parathyroidism, not celiac. This was a simple surgery to remove one
diseased parathyroid and I felt instantly better until I got autoimmune
hepatitis and went to Mayo for help---there I found out my primary problem
was celiac disease. I still have lots of brain problems but I found out
that I am severely deficient in Vitamin D and protein. After medicine, I am
better but not well yet. I was doing much better initially on the D
supplements but then my joints began to hurt again and inflammation and
edema returned. Again, I have severe muscle weakness and ataxia which I had
before I took the supplements. Now my parathyroid hormone measures high
but my calcium is normal!!?? My Vitamin D is also in range now. Stress
makes me an idiot...can barely speak correctly.

It seems as though I find and fix one problem but then something else has
not been diagnosed & treated. I have been so sick for 5 years and I feel
like life is passing me by and I can't do anything more about it. It seems
so unfair that my husband and kids do not get a wife and mother who once
actively and joyfully participated in their lives. I am completely
confident that God's hand is directing my path and molding my character, but
I really struggle to accept that my family has to bear my struggle as well.
They deserve so much more than I am able to give them now.

Lizzie

Has anyone else had problems with intense spaciness/ brain fog /
confusion? Is it/was it significant when first starting the diet?
I'm getting a bit scared.

thanks in advance,
