Because so many on this list have reported problems with depression,
especially in the first year or two of the diet, and since depression is
often reported to be one of the symptoms of those who are gluten poisoned,
I thought the following two studies might be of interest.

Three years ago Duke U ran a major study on depression treatments: they
treated one third with exercise alone; one third with Zoloft the
anti-depression drug; and one third with both drugs and exercise. Their
findings were that six months after the study ended they followed up on the
participants mental health and reported it in the major journal,
Psychosomatic Medicine. Depressive symptoms had returned in 8 percent of
the exercise only patients; 38 percent in the drug group; and 31 percent in
the exercise plus drugs group.

Also, a recent study in Germany noted that the benefits for depression from
exercise kicked in much faster than those due to medication: 10 days for
exercise vs. 2 to 4 weeks for those using meds.

The conclusion was that if you're depressed, beginning with exercise is a
legitimate option. And for those who are so depressed they can't seem to
get up the energy to do so, this problem is often overcome if they exercise
with a group under the direction of a fitness instructor. A local gym or
health club seems to work well too. And being with others seems to offer
additional benefits to the depressed.
