Having just checked the ingredients of flying fish roe at a local sushi
restaurant, I confirm Susan's alert about that food.

Courtesy of very cooperative and sympathetic staff members at the Japanese
restaurant Raku (off Times Square in New York City), I was able to inspect a
plastic container of Tobikko(tm) from Azuma Foods International Inc.,
Hayward, CA 94545. The ingredients are as follows: Flying Fish Roe, High
Fructose Corn Syrup, Soy Sauce (Soybean, Water, Wheat, Salt), Salt, MSG,
Sugar, Kelp Extract, FD&C Red #40.

So it looks like this caviar caveat stands: At least one brand of flying
fish roe is of concern to celiacs because of the presence of
wheat-containing soy sauce.

As you may know, the most common type of flying fish roe is reddish, like
very, very tiny orange-red beads. Flying fish roe should not be confused
with salmon roe, which is a similar color but larger, like globules. Only
salt and salmon roe were ingredients in the box of salmon roe that those
nice restaurant folk brought out to me.

Thank you, Susan and Susan's daughter, for your vigilance.

David
