I and my sister (who have CD) and my son (who I think has CD) all become
"allergic" to antibiotics by the end of the 2 wk period of taking them. In
some cases, we get the typical rashes. Othertimes, my sister has developed
hives. When my son was between 8 mos and 3 y he had numerous ear infections
and it seemed that he had problems with almost every antibiotic we tried. I
have not taken any antibiotics since eating GF (4 y ago) and so don't know
if perhaps now my gut isn't so leaky and so I wouldn't have the problems. I
tend to "tough out" illnesses w/o antibiotic treatment because I've had so
many negative experiences with the drugs over the years. I have many
allergies and "sensitivities" that I assume are related to the
hyperresponsive immune system that those of us with CD have. I have also
found that by keeping those things that I react to that I can control under
control (e.g. gluten ingestion, dust, dust mites, perfumes etc), I don't
react as stongly to things outside my control. For example, when things
were really bad, I could NOT walk down the detergent aisle of the grocery
store. Now, I still smell fragrances more than most people do, but they
don't make me terribly ill. Anyway, its my guess that people w/ CD are in
general a hypersensitive group and will tend to react to foods ingested,
environmental triggers, drugs, etc. more than most people.
