I got this on an eMedicine Consumer Health Update...

"With celiac sprue (also called celiac disease), a person’s body can’t
tolerate gluten, a protein commonly found in wheat, rye, and barley. Ingesting
gluten damages the intestines and leads to malabsorption, a digestive disorder in
which the body doesn’t get the nutrients it needs. Find out more about this
genetic disease in our new article Celiac Sprue, and check out our Esophagus,
Stomach, and Intestine Center for information on other digestive conditions."
