I had several question posed to me asking how Kyra at 12 months was
diagnosed so early, this amazed me since it was a 10 month battle to
find the cause of her ills. Kyra began vomiting at 2 months old, she
was breastfed and I really do not think she was given any "food" or
formula for months. Looking for allergies, at the request of her Ped.
I removed most foods from my diet, and she continued to vomit and have
diarrhea. The Doc insisted the "diarrhea" was normal for breastfed
babies, Kyra is breastfed baby number 4 and I do not agree. She
continued to vomit even with my diet so he had x-rays done looking for
reflux at 3 months old, and at a loss he diagnosed her with reflux. I
took her back to this Pediatrician several times and was told she had
a virus each time. At her 12 month old check-up he told me she was
sensitive to the vitamins in formula, I had began to wean her at
Christmas and she then became very ill. (in retrospect this is when a
lot of grains were introduced) He was a little concerned with her lack
of growth, but his solution was to put her on whole milk. This did
not work. I live in a very small rural town in Southern Utah and I
drive 2 hours to see this Pediatrician. Recently we had a new
Pediatrician come to a town only 25 miles from us and she saw Kyra a
couple of times and said also stomach flu. It was not until Kyra
actually got stomach flu at 12 months old that this Doctor acted. She
said she suspected "sprue", but was giving her a full range of tests.
Kyra went to the Hospital to have a catheter for a urinalysis and her
blood drawn. We collected the stool sample after the stomach flu was
over and she sent it in, I cancelled the x-rays just in case. The
Ped. called us in as soon as she got the results back on the stool
sample. This young Ped. did not know a lot about CD, she had seen a
case in her internship, but she was in contact with someone who does
know and she relayed their info to us, (they also sent the address for
this list) she gave us the choice of having a biopsy done at their lab
or just starting the diet, we chose to start the diet and what an
improvement! Kyra is gaining weight and the vomiting and diarrhea
have already stopped. I keep making mistakes with her diet however,
and would appreciate any help for toddler foods. Actually she is so
tiny, she looks like she is only about 8 months old and just began
eating baby food last month. She is a very picky eater, I can see why
now :D Finger foods would sure be nice and her 2 sisters are starving
for some finger foods since the entire family is on Kyra's diet. Her
sisters are 2 and 4.
Thanks So Much for All Your :D Help
