HELLO EVERYONE,

Thank you so much for all the responses, there are so many out there who
Have the same symptoms and do not know what to do, I hope this summay helps
you all.

I have learnt a lot from it and also put into use some of the suggestions,
With gods grace and some good luck i am sure i can find a solution to my
problem.

The summary is a bit long as i have quoted each and every letter that i have
received, Good luck to you all.

(I wake up that way a lot. I always thought it was the way I slept. Do you
notice in what position that your hands are in when you wake up? Also if I
recall, I only remember waking up to this fact since I went on gluten free
diet. )

(I have the problem at night. With me it is like I have been sleeping on my
arms, but I haven't. They should be getting enough circulation. Don't know
the reason. Sometimes there are spells where it is more often than others.
It doesn't happen to me in the day. Carol )

(it might be your bed and pillow, causing muscles and nerve problems. Try
going to a relax the back store and get a better pillow that will support
your neck when you sleep. )

(Have you tried some high quality (expensive) vitamins to go along with the
B12? I get B12 shots myself to control numbness, parathesias, neuralgias,
etc. I had a great osteopath a few years ago who recommended taking
SourceNatural (USA - they have a website) sublingual B complex. I also use a
B6 and a B2 in combination when I'm having carpal tunnel like problems - it
really works for me. Have to be careful about over loading on a single B
vitamin so as not to throw the others out of wack. SourceNatural also has a
sublingual B12 - but it is really too expensive for me to use all of the
time. Also he told me to take a good Vitamin C - so I take an Ester-C
(easier to absorb). A good multi-vitamin too. Etc. Etc.! One other I might
recommend is Alpha Lipoic acid - you might look into that. It has been
studied in Europe mainly for diabetic periphereal neuropathy problems. Don't
know if this will help - but one way I've been able to control some of the
neuro. type symptoms was to educate myself as much as possible about
nutrition since this is a digestion malabsorption disease and supplement
with vitamins and minerals - even though most physicians seem to think that
it isn't necessary. There are a few good nutrition manuals out there - but
unfortunately I have found that there isn't that much in general about
nutritional science. )

(Hi there. I used to get numbness in my hands and arms a lot. I had a book
recommended to me called "The Yeast Connection", which I highly recommend.
Through it, I learned that I had a problem with Candida - not just a
gynecological Candida problem, but an intestinal yeast problem. I followed a
treatment plan to rid myself of the Candida and I changed my diet. I also
had my mercury fillings redone with another material. Candida feeds off of
mercury (also sugar, lactose, and gluten). I also went through a mercury
detoxification suggested in the same book. You can also have it done
professionally. I think it's called chelation therapy. I have had only
minimal problems (a couple times a year at most) with numbness since I went
through that treatment plan about 8 years ago. Did you say you have lactose
intolerance? That is also a sign of Candida. Do you have multiple allergies?
There's another sign of it. I used to have visual problems and severe
fatigue too, which are also signs of a possible Candida problem. I urge you
to look into this. It did wonders for me. )

(This may seem to be a weird question, but have you looked at how you sleep,
meaning in what position you are sleeping? I was having numbness at night,
then realized I had been sleeping with my arms high over my head. When I
stopped, the numbness went away. (I slept that way when I was younger with
no problem). As I have aged, I've noticed this problem in other positions as
well (arms bent tight at the elbow, wrists bent tightly, anywhere where the
blood circulation may be cut off). just a thought. )

(RAMESH - I had been having some numbness in my hands when I sleep also,
although it sound like you have a worse case than I do. It usually occurs
when I lay on my back and lay my hands on my abdomen. My MD brushed it off
by saying there was a nerve near my elbow that I was probably putting
pressure on when I slept that way. I wasn't convinced of her explanation.
For a while now I haven't had that problem. This could be due to the fact
that I am finally getting some other food sensitivities under control which
has improved my health immensely. For probably close to a year I have been
slowly eliminating foods that cause GI upset(abdominal noise, nausea,
constipation, heartburn, etc.), calf and foot cramps, among other things. I
finally eliminated eggs from my diet and am now slowly adding some of the
previously eliminated foods back into my diet. Most of health problems are
now improving. I can't say that food sensitivities are your problem but you
may suspect that the numbness is a symptom of other problems and not a
specific vitamin deficiency. I would suggest that if you have not had relief
with B12 injections you should quit them. I would be curious whether others
have had this problem also. Could you summarize? Thanks Good luck on your
quest for info. )

(hello, if it only happens in the middle of the night, then it is how
you are sleeping. this happens to me at night and in the day though. you
are pinching something in your neck or spine. does not have to be a
pinched nerve, but something inflammed etc. it can be a nerve in your
neck that is being pinched or just peresthesia. there can be many
conditions that cause this, but most likely it is some way you are
holding your body and pinching the nerve. good luck. i know what a pain
this is. i have it happen to my arms/hands and my legs/feet. any
combo... my left side is worse than my right always. kind of weird, but
no doctor has ever given me any answers. this has only happened to me
since i became a "full blown" celiac after my first pregnancy and during
my 2 plus years of being gf. i keep a diary of what i eat etc every day
as well as sleep times and any problems. sometimes you can find a
trigger if it is a food allergy related thing, but this problem is with
posture, or the nerves. sometimes my hands get hard and totally drained
of blood and i have to physically move them to get them ok. this happens
maybe once a month and scares the crud out of me. my dad has had nerve
damage in his legs for many years and recently the arms in the past 10.
he is putting off the surgery where they fuse the neck. they said it can
either fix the problem or not...no guarnatees pluss you can never turn
your head again after the surgery! he is in constant discomfort and that
yuucky numbness burn you feel. he is very active since he works on
helicopters and aircraft and does a lot of crawling around etc... he has
to put this surgery off until he is older since he relies on his
income....scary. so i am thinking genetics have something to do with
this problem since it seems when i look back in my family there is a
line of problems even with my grandfather. when i was 20 i was diagnosed
with advanced arthritis of the neck. they said i had the neck of a 50 yr
old woman! now i am 32. that explains my arms, but not my legs. i am
thinking it could have happened after pregnancy and childbirth. i had my
daughter born almost 6 weeks late (yes, no joke- my doc was on vacation
and did not want to induce prior...) and my baby gave me many problems
during a super long 28 hr. labor. back labor... so.... sorry i do not
have any ideas. i have never been given any, nor has my dad. make sure
you have a good bed and pillows. maybe try to get someone to massage you
once a month to loosen up any muscles that may be too tight. drink
enough fluids to keep blood volume high. have you had your arms tested
for nerve damage? i would suggest this. (for my neck, i was told to not
use the computer.. but i did this for my job for many years. i made sure
that my monitor was just the right height and did not have to strain to
look at it either up or down..) good luck,)

(I have the same thing in my feet. They too are giving me B12 shots. The
Doctor also has me soaking my feet in epson salts daily, then putting on a
50- 50 mix of lotrimin, and hydrocortisone cream 1%. This is all over the
counter stuff. I don't know how much it helps, but it doesn't get any worse.
I slacked off on using this at one time, and my feet did get worse. I went
back to it and they got better, but only to a point.)

(I had the same numbness. I found that I had to remove dairy from my diet
too. Also if I eat meat that has been grain fed, I get a reaction. I try to
buy grass fed meat. www.eatwild.com )

(You could have some other allergies like corn, potatoes, nuts. Nuts give me
alot of problems too and I found out that cinnamon is another problematic
food.

By eliminating problematic foods, you will eventually find out which one it
is that is causing problems. It took me a year to discover that nuts were a
huge problem for me! )

(The doctor that I go to is a Celiac Specialist (Dr. Green out of New York
Presbyterian Hospital) and he claims that Celiacs develop neurological
problems because of the disease. I have been having dizziness for a few
years and no doctor has been able to tell me what is wrong and how to
correct it, if possible. On April 27, I am going to a neurologist that Dr.
Green has recommended. He claims that she is aware of the neurological
damage that Celiac can have on our systems. I am hoping that she can at
least EXPLAIN what is happening and why I get these dizzy spells as well as
very bad headaches. If you are interested in the results of my visit next
week, e-mail and I will let you know. Good Luck - )

(I have the same thing and it's carpal tunnel syndrome. You need to see a
neurologist and get nerve conduction studies done. Take care and let me know
if you need any further info....)

(This is just a suggestion. I have experienced the same feelings in hands
and legs and had every medical test to determine the cause. Every dr. tells
me there is nothing wrong with me. Then, I did some research on my own. I
found out that peripheral neuropathy is one of the symptoms associated with
celiac disease. I read that taking niacin supplements will help. Apparently
our bodies don't absorb enough of these nutrients. After taking the
supplements for a couple months, I have almost none of these symptoms any
more. I was also having terrible acne breakouts since going GF. I also take
B6 supplements for that. Has helped tremendously. No more breakouts. I think
that most doctors do not realize that celiac can cause such a variety of
symptoms. Sometimes it is up to us to inform them. Good Luck, )

(Just a suggestion but whenever I'm low on Calcium my arm and legs go numb.
You might want to get a blood check on it.)

(For the last 3 years I have been with gluten, casein, lecithin free
diets...I do not have any digestive problems anymore but the urticaria
(rash)(not DH) has never been cured..So the last 1 and half year has past
with trying different combinations of antihistamines... )

(For the last 6 months I have been experiencing same problems with my hands
and fingers...

Sometimes that wakes me up at the middle of the night too. I have to shake
my hands as fast as I can to get some feeling back...My doc could not figure
it out...If you can get an answer please forward to me too.)

(The problem you describe could be more a physical-mechanical problem than a
nutritional one. Or you may need to address the numbness from both points of
view. I've had occasional numbness in my hands and arms, especially at
night. My doctor feels it may have something to do with arthritic changes in
my cervical spine that are pinching the nerves; an xray of my neck does show
some changes (I'm in my 50s). Being sure that the neck and head are
supported properly during sleep may help you; I keep a pillow that I can
fold to support my head and keep my neck straight, whatever position I'm in,
and that does help me a lot with night-time numbness. Another cause, which
is simple to avoid, is leaning on the elbows during the day. This pinches a
nerve that goes to the hands, and causes numbness and tingling. Carpal
tunnel syndrome can also cause tingling, but you have probably already
explored this possibility. Good luck!)

(This happens to me when I eat rice products, even a very small amount. My
guess is, rice is to high in carbs and why I can not tolerate it. No rice no
numbness in hands at night. )

(I experience pain and numbness in my hands and arms as well the soles of my
feet, but the degree you suffer seems much greater. I had similar experience
with the B12 shots. Medications seem ineffective and there are many times
when my heating pad seems like my best friend. )

(It sounds like Carpal Tunnel Syndrome which some coeliacs get, also people
with thyroid disorders (so this should maybe be checked also). You should be
able to get some info from the Internet about CTS. There's a page on it at
the very good www.thyroid.about.com site. I believe pressure on the nerves
from swelling causes the problem. I think it is difficult to treat but my
mother, who has this in one arm and hand, uses a splint at night to keep the
wrist straight. )
