I was 65 pounds overweight when dxed. Since then, I have had problems losing that weight and had to see a nutritionist for help. It now appears that I had gluten toxins and, probably, hormones built up in that fat from my pre-gf days. My nutritionist explained that it is possible for adipose fat to store toxins under certain conditions. He said that my body, being inundated with toxins and having no way of easily disposing of them due to an already over loaded and congested lymphatic system, found a way to hide away those toxins in my adipose fat.

I had difficulty losing any of it, but I have finally lost about 45 pounds and I am still working on the last 20. As I lose it tho, I get very ill and have symptoms similar to gluten attacks and pms (tho I had a hysterectomy years ago), which is why the nutritionist thinks this is toxic fat. I am almost as ill as I was pre-gf diet, tho I can pause the diet if it gets to be too much. I wonder if other overweight celiacs have the same problem with toxic fat and that is why we became overweight.

Yes, I was overweight, I did not have ANY of the "classic" symptoms of being celiac. I had to really push my doctor into getting me tested for it. (a friend of mine thought that I might be celiac, and she really encouraged me to push the issues) Good thing that I did! I was extremely ill at the time. That doctor really had to eat crow over this!

I was diagnosed while being 85 pounds overweight. I immediately dropped 20 lbs after switching to gluten free, but I continue to struggle getting down to where I should be!

My husband was diagnosed about 7 years ago and he has always been on the
heavy side -- never lost weight before diagnosis. His primary symptom was
GERD and occasional rapid heartbeat .

Yep, lots of us "pudgy" celiacs out here! ;-)

Then there are those of us who were overweight before we got sick, got
not-so-good-skinny when we developed CD, and then went overweight again
after diagnosis, (1) because our bodies absorbed nutrients again; and
(2) we didn't take into account the fact that many GF baked products are
higher in fat and calories than the regular versions, to make 'em taste
good; and/or (3) we overate on the GF stuff because "we found something
we _could_ eat!" Wonderful, eh?

Physicians are still kinda slow on the uptake about the fact that there
is NO "typical presentation" of celiac disease -- granted, the potential
symptoms list is as long as your arm, but for a doctor to say, "Because
you aren't skinny and having GI problems (diarrhea and the rest), you
don't have it." is too common but just sad.

Not sure from your email what your situation is, but hope you are able
to get to a good healthy place!

I was diagnosed while being overweight. In fact I gained a lot of weight before being diagnosed. The reason why I insisted that the doctor test further, which ultimately resulted in me being diagnosed
was because my abdomen was so distended and bloated. They always say that is a sign of celiac in children , not usually adults, but I did not find that to be the case. I have had trouble with my stomach for many years. I am still struggling with weight though there is some improvement.

I was diagnosed while overweight and have been overweight most of my adult life. Was misdiagnosed with osteoporosis for 5 years first. Everyone told me I’d drop weight like crazy and instead I’ve gained even more! Looking forward to your summary on the listserve.

i became overweight just before being diagnosed with
grave's disease (another condition that usually causes
wt. loss) and a wheat allergy. the diagnosis of
gluten related enteropathy came later. it has been
extremely difficult to lose the extra weight and only
by cutting out all refined carbohydrates and
exercising a lot can i shed any pounds.

i remember reading that about 12% of celiacs are
overwt. when diagnosed but no longer have the article
for backup.

I had lost 28 pounds and was not overweight when diagnosed.

I must have missed the original posting. I find it especially interestting that many folks were overweight at time of diagnosis. And gained weight after. I have been overweight much of my life. I weighted 160 lbs. as a H.S. Sophomore (miserable!), then starting in my 20's I lost about 10 pounds and a dress size each decade. Then aged 61,I made a drastic weight loss (lost 20 lbs. in two months). This led to my diagnosis. After going GF, I regained most of the weight loss. Now I'm 130 (5-6.5"), and I tend to lose weight, if anything... and regain it. I try to maintain it at around 130 and I eat like a grazing cow!....small/medium meals and snacks. I'm now 70.

join the club! couldn't I have been skinny? but my son was very thin and
I was diagnosed through him. am back at Weight Watchers.

Oh I should have said that I have always been pudgy, but since getting off
gluten
my malabsorption must be improving (?!) as it is easier to gain weight, a
mixed
blessing.

When I was diagnosed 2 years ago, my weight was (and still is) 270 pounds,
about 70 pounds too much for my 6'-1" frame. I do not have the classic
gluten symptoms like cramps and diarrhea, instead I don't absorb vitamins
and minerals when on gluten. I suspect that I was eating a lot in quest of
vitamins and minerals. Unfortunately for my waistline, I had no problem
absorbing fats, carbs, and protein.

I'm not a lot overweight (about 10 lbs.) but I have found that if I eat
grains and starches on the gluten free diet, I gain weight.
Therefore, I rarely eat any breads, cookies, cakes, etc. I choose to
cut out grains instead to maintain a healthy weight.

Good health is more important than eating what everyone else does. I
can gratify and reward myself with things other than food.

I was overweight from a steroid producing Pituitary Gland tumor, and was
diagnosed Celiac 5 years after they diagnosis, while I was still overweight.
I just cannot seem to lose that steroid induced weight.
~

The reason for my first blood test (positive) and biopsy (positive) were weight loss. It was my only symptom.

I was diagnosed in January 2000 after about 18 months and many thousands(it seemed) dollars of tests. I don't think my Dr. even thought of CS as I was a "healthy-looking" middle-aged female, not typical, I weighted close to 175 lbs. not obese but too much for my 5'6" frame. Funny thing is, I began losing weight after being gf for about a year, lost about 30 lbs. in a short time, then Dr. was worried about me because of my weight loss. I have gained a little of this back now, in fact I'm struggling right now to keep my weight under control, as I retired in Oct. and am no longer on my feet all the time!
