I was investigating caramel colouring through Schweppes cola. The chemist
at Schweppes informed me that carmel colouring is a derivative of glucose
which is manufacturered from ...yes you guessed it..wheat starch!!This
was in 1993. The chen\mist went on to say that they did think that any
gluten would be detectable from this. Adding that I should look at the
preservatives used as they may be the culprits. I tried out his theory,
yes I did react to preservatives (mainly the sulfates) but caramel
colouring in other foods still presented a reaction. This was done over
a period of weeks to allow for my system to calm down between each new
test. I asked others in our group about their reactions to certain drinks
and quite a few answered in agreeance.

As to our labelling laws re drinks. If a food or drink is not normally
considered to be a product that would have a replacement in a Gf diet
eg bottled water, then they need no labelling - the same applies to colas
etc. just a list of their ingredients in decending order of quantity.
