My husband, our children and I recently returned from Maine via Boston
and want to share the resources I found. I had inquired from the listserv
about restaurants and stores in those areas and some were useful and some were
not. So here is my experience.
In Boston, I had been told to go to Jake and Earl's Dixie Barbeque.
We went there and were thrilled that they offered a separate, whole page long
Celiac menu. We ate the barbeque chicken and the barbeque ribs, along with
wonderful side dishes of corn on the cob, watermelon, mashed potatoes, etc. We
met the owner, who was very nice and accomodating. His staff is trained in
cooking, serving, and preventing cross-contamination, so we felt very at ease
there. I highly recemmend it for care-free gluten free dining.

We next went to Camden, Maine. We were renting a house, so planned on
cooking most of our meals. I had been told there was a store on the main
street called Mother's Cupboard Kitchen which would carry lots of gf items.
Well, there was no such store, so the person who recommended it must have been
thinking of a different Camden or the store has closed.
Next I tried a small natural foods store in the town called Nature's
Choice. It offered very little in the line of gluten free foods, so I was
quite disappointed. We were able to buy some fruit leather and a box of Nutty
Rice. I asked the cashier why he didn't have more and he said it was all he
could get through his distributor. So, I was quite disheartened. Nature's
Choice

We also tried Graves grocery store, because I had been told to go to
Hannaford's for their Nature's Place department, and that Grave's had been
bought out by Hannafords. So we went to the one near Camden. They had some
snacks and energy bars and rice and Envirokidz cereal bars, but I didn't find any
gf bread to buy. So it was disappointing. Perhaps the original Hannaford
would have been worth driving to.
I was quite glad I had packed quite a few gf items to take to Maine,
otherwise we would have been quite hungry. The next place we went was Acadia
National Park, which has Bar Harbor on the same island. The list I had said
there would be an Alternative Natural Food Market at 99 Main Street in Bar
Harbor. Well, after driving back and forth, up and down Main Street and still not
finding it, we decided that it must have closed or been a mistake. So, we
struck out again.
But all hope was not lost. With 2 days to go on our vacation, we
remembered to check out a store called Fresh Off the Farm in Rockport, Maine, not
far from Camden. It was absolutely wonderful! They not only sold organic
foods, but they had a large selection of gluten free foods, gf bread, gf cereal,
gf snacks, gf baking mixes, gf flours, gf ingredients, etc. I was so
thrilled. I even found some items I had never seen in stores or catalogs at home
(near Pittsburgh). So if you are in the area, this is definitely the store you
want to visit. The owner said his wife has Celiac among other ailments, so she
researches and gets many, many gf items for their store. I have no
affiliation with this store, I was just so thrilled with it.

I hope this helps any of you who are also planning a trip to Maine. Boston
and Camden were both wonderful places to visit.
Laurie
