Greg, I mentioned this to my doctor, and he said the tannins could cause
itching. Before I went on a GF diet I couldn't drink red wine at all.
Now I tolerate most quite well in small quantities.

Obviously tannins don't contain gluten, and its quite possible that some
other substance is responsible. A friend mentioned sulfites, but these
don't bother me in other contexts.
