This isn't strictly a gluten-free diet (GFD) issue. However, herbal
remedies such as St. Johnswort and ginkgo biloba have been discussed
on the list in the past as a method for accelerating the healing
process and improving the immune system after the diagnosis of Celiac
Disease (CD). Therefore, even though this is not strictly about CD
or the GFD, I thought it worth passing on.

A recent article in Reader's Digest (the Feb. 2000 issue, pg. 37,
"Supplement Alert") warns against using some of these remedies prior
to surgery:

"...ginkgo biloba, garlic and ginger....can prevent blood clots from
forming....and have also been associated with prolonged bleeding."

"St. Johnswort (an anti-depressant) and kavakava (a relaxant)....may
   prolong anesthesia's sedative effect."

"The American Society of Anesthesiologists suggest that patients
stop taking such products at least two weeks before elective surgery,
if possible, and....keep doctors informed of....medications and
   supplements."
