Just my $.02 - my son was 15 months when he had his intestinal biopsy. I
must truthfully say, it wasn't fun for me, and dealing with the no
eating or drinking for a number of hours wasn't great either. BUT in
general the child is asleep for the procedure and isn't conscious of any
discomfort. My son has a pretty high tolerance for anesthesia, so it
turned out that he didn't ever fall asleep, but let me tell you, he was
so drunk that he didn't know WHAT was going on! When it was over, he sat
up and kissed the GI. Had no ill effects whatsoever. In looking at the
alternatives rationally, this procedure doesn't seem to be too much,
even for a toddler, to undergo - a few hours of growling stomach & a
little nap at the hospital hardly seem too high a price to pay for a
diagnosis.

I would encourage other parents to go through with the procedure. It
does a child no favors to wait.
