Hey all.

Just wanted to update the Hormel chili message I sent a few days ago. I
called them again to ask if they thicken their tomato paste with flour. They
told me that since 1994, any product with meat or made from meat is controlled
by the USDA and they are required to list all sources of gluten (or other
allergens, I assume). She also said they don't thicken their tomato paste
with flour.

I also found out from her that their pepperoni is gluten-free and that the
same 1994 law applies to that, since it's meat.

Of course, I don't quite understand why we have so much trouble with additives
in ham (5% "baste" or "in natural juices") if meats are controlled by the
USDA. Maybe Hormel just actually follows the law instead of trying to get
around it?

Anyhow, there's the info, and enjoy the stuff if you so desire!
