My fellow celiacs,

Since sending out this ad earlier this week I've been asked one question multiple times, and wanted to address it to the group:

How can a celiac be in the military?

Well, the answer is somewhat ambigous. Current Army regulations do not list celiac disease as cause for removal from service. However a 'nutrional deficiency' or 'malabsorbtion' are listed and may be cause for discharge per the Army standards of medical fitness.

I have been to many Army physicals and I have mentioned my affliction with gluten everytime. Everytime I was asked if I was confident in my ability to eat gluten free. I said yes, and was sent back into the ranks. I imagine if I had said 'no' I would have been discharged or not allowed in.

While I do know celiacs that have been discharged, I also know others who are proudly serving. Leaving the area gray and somewhat fuzzy. All this aside, I would add to any celiac thinking about joinging the military that ensuring you have a good understanding of what you are getting yourself into is more important than if you will be let in.

Also, thank you to everyone who sent me patriotic and warm responses. Your support is truly appreciated.

And finally, I am always available to answer questions about my experiences; be it for your gluten free website or for your own knowledge.

Respectfully,

CPT B. Donald Andrasik

> I have written a memoir about my time as a celiac in Afghanistan, to my great joy it is now available on Amazon.com. The story shares my frustrations with the diet while in a hostile environment with limited resources. I hope it will provide you with a new perspective on gluten free dieting and perhaps make the diet seem easier for anyone struggling with it. Check it out at glutenfreeinafghanistan.com or Amazon.com
