Sorry this summary took so long; computer died completely and horribly.

I received many replies and a few asking just how I do pizza without
tomato sauce.  I bake the dough for about 5 - 10 minutes then spread on
minced garlic (McCormick/Shilling), sprinkle on an Italian seasoning
mix (McCormick/Schilling), and top with fresh basil leaves (the larger
the better), mushroom mix (usually portabellos, button, chantarelle,
and whatever else looks good), and, if I'm feeling decent, mozarella.
Sometimes I'll add pine nuts or a little parsley for extra flavor, or
even a dash of balsamic vinegar.

Nightshades seem just one of the many things Celiacs react to once in
the healing process.


The suggestions:

- Allergy clinic and/or Allergy treatment (this hasn't worked for me
personally, but I know others who have been helped by allergy
treatments)

- NAET treatment

- D'amado's book has a recipe for non-nightshade catsup

- Kosher foods

- Macrobiotic diet

- Rotation diet and/or giving it time

- Penzey's mustard recipe

I learn to do without.  My pizza is not only tomato and green pepper
free - but it has to be cheese free.  Lots of basil and garlic.

I make my own mustard also.  I have found that if I add powdered
mustard to boiling water it will thicken without any additional stuff.
I add a little turmeric for color.  I use part water - part rice
vinegar.  I haven't added horseradish to it, yet.

Pickles help out - I make my own, so I know what is in them.  Otherwise
there are a few that may be paprika free - I have enjoyed Bubbie's.

I don't eat hot dogs or chip type things - so can't help you there.

I do use ginger - but sparingly since a little can go a long ways in
giving things some spice.

I really wish there was a non-nightshade green/red pepper substitute.
It would add a lot to a pizza without tomatoes, but so far I don't know
of anything.

For pizza...I have had one made without tomatoes but with a garlic
cream sauce as a base it was rather good.

Spice things with garlic (salt), onion (salt), and celery salt,
parsley, thyme, basil, Herbs of Providence.

When I read your post, I immediately thought of a recipe I saw in the
"Cook Right 4 Your Type" cookbook, by Dr. Peter J. D'Adamo.  It is
copyrighted, so I won't copy it.  But you can find a recipe for Pizza
Sauce Substitute on page 180 of this book.  There are no tomato
products in it.  It does contain paprika, but no doubt that can be
omitted without seriously damaging the results--it's probably just for
the color.  Maybe beet juice instead of some of the water?  The other
ingredients are:  sugar, salt, oregano, basil, thyme, parsley, onion
powder, garlic powder, anise flavoring, and water.  If you enjoy and
can tolerate these other ingredients, try getting the book from your
library or through InterLibrary Loan.  Then you can try the recipes and
see if it is worth buying.  I haven't tried this recipe, but I have
used several others, and they were all good.

According to Dr. D'Adamo, tomatoes are an Avoid for blood types A and
B, and to be used sparingly by types O and AB, so his web site's
message board would be a good place to ask your question.  Check it out

There are several food allergy sites on the Net.  I haven't used any of
them yet, but I would like to.  Probably someone will send some addys
to you.  A lot of people know themselves to be sensitive to
nightshades, so I  expect there is a lot of info out there that will
answer your questions.

I'm CD and can't eat nightshades either.  Not even potatoes in my
case.  It was easier to find a solution for  potatoes  (yucca and taro)
 than for the peppers.  I don't have an answer for peppers.  Would like
to hear about replacements.   I don't use tomatoes either. I've eaten
GF/CF pizza with a pesto sauce...Yummy.  I use a GF mustard from a
Glendale CA company called True Natural Taste Organic White Mustard
(800) 559-2998. Mustard is in a different botanical family than
nightshades,  so you should be okay there.   Go to an Asian grocery
store and look for vegetable or rice based snack foods  and fresh spicy
greens.  Things like cilantros, lemon grasses, tamarinds.  Prepackaged
snacks are still a  preservative risk, but the labels are getting
better every year.   I always experiment with one new item every visit.
 This week it was taro root and coconut milk  stuffed inside sweet rice
(glutinous rice but not gluten) and wrapped in banana leaves.  Once
steamed it was really tasty.   When ever i can't have something-- I
always check into foods from a different culture for alternatives.  I'm
lucky to live in Southern California too.

I'm sure you already know, but beware of eggplants, too. You would
certainly find some useful information through www.feingold.org, as
that diet eliminates not only artificial flavors, colors, and
preservatives, but also naturally occuring salicylates (e.g. tomato,
almond, grapes, paprika...) in the stage I - stage II allows the
naturals back in, so you need the stage 1 shopping list. Hope this is
