There have been some questions about hypothyroidism and celiac.This
is my humble understanding as a nurse.    If your hypothyroidism is
due to an autoimmune disease-called Hashimoto's disease- in which the
autoimmune system destroys the thyroid then the relationship is that
when one has one autoimmune disease they are subject to others as all
those genes are one Chromosone 6 and when one is mixed up, others are

From information from The Thyroid Foundation, there is a blood test
for antibodies against the thyroid.   The most senstive test if
antithyro-peroxidast test.    In my practice, most docs run a thyroid
panel which includes TSH, T3 T4 and free T4.  TSH is a stimulating
hormone produced by the pituitary gland which makes the thyroid gland
produce  more hormone.  Usually in Hashimoto's disease the TSH is
very high as it is trying to make the thyroid gland.  Often the
thyroid gland located in the neck by the adams apple is swollen.
T3 T4 and free T4 are hormones from the thyroid.  In the beginning
these may be normal but later as the thyroid gland is destroyed they
become low.

The treatment is usually taking a thyroid preparation daily.  There
are a couple on the market now due a lawsuit  by the consumers to the
company that made synthroid. Some people have very good results from
therapy and others do not.
