We drive through Staten Island about 2-3 times a month on our trips between Brooklyn and our home in NJ. Generally, we'll stop there for dinner, before heading across to Jersey for the long ride south.

We have had fantastic success at the Charley Brown's Steakhouse, right off the Staten Island expressway (westbound), just before the approach to the Goethals Bridge (on the service road). Even though they changed managers recently and have a load of new waitstaff, (summer staff may have gone back to college), I keep having repeated success there. I've written to headquarters several times about the management and the waitstaff...by name....all positive stuff. (I don't send negative stuff unless the management can't handle it on the spot....which they've always been fine about.)

But, I'd love someplace else on occasion. Does anyone know any restaurants on Staten Island that accommodate gluten-free? I'm fine with a plain meal and explaining the diet. I just want to avoid the experience of explaining it, getting a dumb blank response from a waitress....and my having to leave and find another place. (We've all had that, I presume.)

We once tried an Italian restaurant, off the main highways...closer to the southeastern shore of the island. I don't know what they did, but it was one of the few times in the many years I've been gf that I got real sick....could have been food poisoning, because I don't normally react that badly. But I won't go back there.....I have no idea what the name is, but it was near Huguenot Ave. (spelling is probably wrong).

Thanks, Lin
