Below are some of the emails received about Fosamax & Pregnancy.

########
I was diagnosed with Osteoporosis 4 years ago and my rheumatologist put me on Miacalcin - it's a nasal spray made from salmon bones - no side effects - you spray in one nostril each day. I had a bone density test last month and I no longer have osteoporosis - I do have Osteopenia (low bone density) but so much better Dr. couldn't believe it. He recently put me on Actonel and I've had no problems. The technician who did the bone density test told me patients reports less problems with Actonel than Fosomax. Good luck.

Generally, pregnancy (and breastfeeding) have a great impact on the mother's
health. The baby will take what it needs, and if your health/nutrition
isn't adequate the necessary nutrients (like calcium) will be taken from
your bones.

Fosamax is listed as Pregnancy Category C - this means that animal studies show
adverse effects to the fetus, but no human studies have been done. It usually
means a serious talk with your doctor about the potential benefits of the drug
vs. the potential risks to the fetus. It is never an easy decision. I would
recommend getting (if you don't already have) a really, really good
obstetrician who can speak frankly with you about the issues. I know a few in
NYC, San Francisco, and Concord, New Hampshire, if you'd like a recommendation.

why don't you switch to Twin Lab's TRI=BORON PLUS...a natural supplement with
cal/mag and boron with Vit D for sbsorption. THREE drs told me to take this and at
age 61 my bone density is at +2. My current md when he heard my numbers took
several of his patients OFF fosomax and put them on the tri-boron plus. I firsst
took it when I had a broken shoulder...within less than 6 weeks the bone was
healed...Orthopedist couldn't get over how fast it healed.
I've had my 22 year old take it since she was in her early teens....she's never had
a menstral cramp since.

Since it's a mineral formula you won't have to worry about harming the baby, but
you should check with your md...they usually want you to take more than 1gram per
day when you are pregnant

There is another drug for osteoporosis on the market that is supposed to be almost as effective as Fosamax and is a nasal spray (I have forgotten the name). I am sure you r doctor knows of it or can find out about it. Perhaps if no studies are yet available on Fosamax and pregnancy, you could switch temporarily to the other drug. Since it is a nasal spray, it would probably not have any negative effects on pregnancy. Just a thought! RC

My opinion would be to wait a year and build up more bone.
