Thanks to everyone who responded to my question with information about
restaurants in Santa Barbara. One person sent information about a great
sounding website--see below.
Irma

SB has a Chevy's, Chipotle, In 'N Out, Baja Fresh and Outback (2 people
mentioned Outback), all of whom have GF lists that you can get ahead of
time. Chucks of Hawaii has steaks & a great Salad bar (N.B. No information
given on gf awareness of chefs.)
Empress Palace has a great rice vermicelli and shrimp dish (N.B. No
information given on gf awareness of chefs.)
The Sojourner on Canon Perdido and The Natural Cafe on State street
are "health" oriented restaurants. We like the Sojourner a lot. They note
on the menu which items can be ordered vegan. The rice dream smoothie is
really good.
Try www.goodhealthpublishing.com for a guide with 50 national/regional
restaurants and their lists of Gf/WF menu items.

Extra info: SB has Trader Joes and a pretty
good health food store--Lazy Acres.
Lazy Acres makes GF cranberry &
blueberry muffins & brownies in their bakery but call ahead to
make sure they are in stock
