      I sent the basic message below to the celiac listserv..

 

      Normally, celiacs gain weight going gluten free because the villi are
healing and they are starting to absorb more nutrients (and calories).  You
should pay attention to your portion sizes and a plan a balanced diet for
best nutrition.

 

(Personally, I have a ton of weight to lose.  I can abstain from gluten with
no problem (as I have done for about 23 years) but staying away from sweets
is very hard.  I saw one of our board (celiac support group) dietitians and
she suggested having at least one ounce of protein at breakfast and lunch;
probably 3 oz. for dinner.  I am trying.  Exercise is essential as well.)

 

When Dr. Oz railed against the GF diet as a weight-loss aid on his show,
some say he was off base.  His attack was really against processed GF foods
such as cookies and breads, but it came off as an assault on all things
gluten free.  What Dr. Oz should have been emphasizing are the benefits of a
naturally GF diet, full of lean meats, whole grains, fruits and vegetables.
Reasonable portions of those foods will go a long way toward a healthful
weight-loss plan for anyone.

However, there are some resources that will help you in your journey to lose
weight.  I suggest writing down everything you eat - a food diary - and
stick to it.  All these GF cookbooks (and many other GF cookbooks) have the
nutritional breakdowns for you to see the calories or figure the
WeightWatchers PlusPoints.   WeightWatchers does work, if you work at it;
i.e., keep close track daily of whatever you eat plus weekly weigh-ins.  You
eat real food and figure the points from the actual labels, whether GF or
not. Exercise is highly encouraged as well.
