Many, many thanks to all the people who responded to my inquiries.
Please forgive the delay of this summary, but, as anyone with an
almost-two-year-old knows, I've been a little busy.


I received wonderful, thoughtful advice and am happy to report that the
subject of my original inquiry, Westsoy Plus, was confirmed to be
gluten-free, not only by several of you, but by a return phone call
(FINALLY!) from the company.  I like this particular brand because it
has the same calcium content as whole milk.


Several of you reported that young children diagnosed with celiac
(infant/toddler age) were soon able to tolerate whole milk again by
about age three; cheese and yogurt somewhat sooner.  That is relief to
hear, and I hope a relief to other wondering mothers.

Following are excerpts of the responses I received.  Several people
suggested adding powdered calcium to my milk substitute.  A brilliant
suggestion.  Milk summary is first; bologna is last.  Thanks again!


Alsoy infant formula by Carnation would be fine for your son; dilute it
2:l water to formula.

Lactaid Milk
Pacific rice milks are GF

(From Washington State) Sovex Better Than Milk is my favorite.  They also
make a really good product called Instead of Yogurt.  Better Than Milk
comes in plain, chocolate, carob, and light .  .  .  Check your local
health food store, or check the archives for the toll free number (you
can call to see where it is distributed in your area.)


Try Westbrae rice milk; it is fortified and has no gluten.  Soy is a
common allergen.

When my oldest celiac was diagnosed, she was lactose intolerant, so we
used lactaid drops in her milk and she did well on them.


BOLOGNA:  General concensus is that Oscar Meyer is the bologna of
choice.  Their all-beef is gf, as well as several others.   Diane in
Ozark, Arkansas, suggested calling 608-285-6822 to receive of their
gluten-free products.  Several people also recommended products
available in their regional areas:  Bar-S (Ozark, Arkansas); Boar's
Head.  I finally received a call from Eckridge and their all-beef
bologna is gluten-free.  Unfortunately, it's only available at the deli
counter, which opens it up for possible cross contamination.  I've opted
for the Oscar Meyer, and Michael loves it.
