Breastfeeding is best for any baby, any species, always. This is a fact
that is not argued anymore between any health professional. CD is a
genetically predisposed disease not a disease of exposure, and gluten
proteins are too large to be passed through breast milk. This was from
the last breastfeeding thread I remember on the list. Someone may be
able to access this through the archives, I don't know how and don't
quite have the time. Before you treat thrush with gentian violet you
need to be aware that it can cause permanant purple discoloration on the
nipple. Thrush in the mom is evident because the let down will sting
very badly in the nipples. Thrush in the infant is evidenced by the
familiar white splotches in the mouth. Both mom and infant should be
treated if either are symptomatic. There is a product available by
prescription only called nystatin that kills the yeast causing thrush.
It can be bought in a suspension or cream. The mom can use the
suspension on her nipples but it gets a little sticky. It should clear
up in 3days to a week. Not meant as medical advice but information.
The thrush info comes to me from the Le Leche League, and WIC, and is
standard of care in the US. I am a pharmacist. Hope you get relief!
