Ingrid,

I make powdered sugar in a Vita-Mix. This appliance is a blender designed by
a maniac. It will reduce wooden blocks to sawdust, although that dings the
container. Among other things, it can be used to:

     chop make crumbs from bread
crush ice make snow cones, slurpies & juice bars
make soft-serve frozen desserts make fruit syrups
powder sugar grind grains, coffee, beans, and peas
grind meat, shred cheese whip cream (makes butter too)
"juice" (actually puree all edible parts, much more nutritious)
mix dough (can start from whole grain)
cook puddings (by friction from the blades!)

Although a little on the loud side, it will powdered sugar with no problem at
all. The process produces steam, and the finished product has a metallic
smell while it is still hot that goes off it as it cools. I use this powdered
sugar all the time for icings and so forth for two little corn intolerant
celiacs.
