My question about nuts was whether or not plain nuts found in health food
stores are safer than nuts found in grocery stores or in places such as
Costco or Walmart?

Apparently, people buy nuts where they feel comfortable getting them. The
biggest issue was buying nuts processed in facilities that also processes
food made with wheat. One respondent sent this note:

"I did notice that Triumph's Gluten Free Grocery Guide (2008) lists quite a
few Planter's products as being gluten-free. I've found this guide to be a
helpful starting point/extra step when considering groceries. Will be
interested to see if any listserv members mention Planter's."

A number of people buy nuts at Costco, but there were some people who have
returned nuts to Costco because the container states they are processed in a
facility that processes wheat products. So, it seems to be a matter of how
strict one wants or needs to be.

I went to a Fresh Market, thinking that they might have nuts that I felt
were more likely to be GF, but I didn't find evidence of that. All of their
bagged nuts, even the organic, stated they were processed in facilities that
also processes foods made with wheat.

Perhaps it becomes a matter of brand, as it often is with GF foods. And we
always need to be cognizant of the fact that companies don't want to be
sued, so though their cleaning protocol may be exceptional, they add the
disclaimer to the label, just to be safe. No one replied that they had
bought nuts that were clearly contaminated.

Thanks to everyone who responded... ~~Ayn in Alabama
