Listmates,

Here are the main recommendations from the 9 responses that I received
about eating and shopping in Montreal.

1) Specialty food stores:

-De Ro Ma was mentioned by almost everyone. Several raved about the
extensive, tasty products. Mail order in the U.S., Canada and possibly
internationally. Based in Laval (suburb north of Montreal).

http://www.cosmo2000.ca/deroma, [log in to unmask] (800)363-DIET, fax:
(450) 629-4781.

-Sesame: 5550 Sherbrooke West (west of Decarie Bld), (514)488-9886. Not
too too far from downtown. Good choice of products. Willing to do mail
order.

-Marie Nature: one person wrote: "relatively new..wonderful homemade breads
and cookies, cakes, bagels etc. They are the best in my opinion." 450-687-2287.

-Le Tournesol: 1251 Beaubien east (514)274-3629

2) Restaurants:

The main message was that Montreal has good and (for the most part)
accomodating restaurants. Just explain your dietary restrictions. A
couple of people listed some of their favourites. I haven't included them
here because they're not specifically GF or special diet oriented. It was
noted that Swiss Chalet has a brochure listing their GF food. We found
(I'm sure you all know this) that many big chains have product information
brochures under the counter somewhere.

3) Bonus information for those going to Quebec City.

Four stores in ***Quebec City*** (not Montreal)

-L'Essential 652 boul. Rene Levesque Ouest Tel:418-527-0447

Fax:418-646-0867 (Quebec City)
-Le panier vert (418)862-0105 (Quebec City)
-Epiecerie Europeene (418)418-529-4847 (Quebec City)
-Diete Sante Riesen, Les Saules near Quebec, (418) 872-2169 (Quebec City)

We had a good trip to Montreal by the way, and a *lot* of fun buying tons
of food to bring home.
