SUMMARY OF REQUEST FOR DOCTORS IN NY CITY

Hi everyone,
I recently posted 2 requests to the list. One was asking for
gastroenterologists and the other asking for general physicians in NY
City who accept HIP health insurance. Many people recommended Dr.
Peter Green at the Columbia University Celiac Disease Center. He is one
of the best gastroenterologists in the world and a top expert on CD.
I am actually seeing Dr. Green very soon, but he is not on my health
insurance. It is very likely, though, that the insurance company will
accept the fact that it’s necessary to see him, since CD is so “rare”
in the USA and my case of CD made me very seriously ill for the past
few years.

For those of you also searching for doctors in NY City, here is a
summary of posts that I received:

Dr. Nina Priven - (212) 874-6600. I think she's part of West Side
internal medicine - 90th and Columbus. (not on HIP)

The top gastro guy in the world is in Manhattan. He is Dr Richard
Warner. I envy you for being so close to this guy. He knows his stuff
quite well. I am not sure about celiac but if there is an underlying
problem with celiac he will most definitely funnel it out.
I think Dr Warner is an internist as well. (no phone number or contact
info given) (Not on HIP)

I use Dr. Michael Wiechowski, at 2 West 86th. (212-769-4149) He is
hip, (not HIP, though!), smart, practical, caring, very aware of CD and
of the possible implications of same. He is also honest - doesn't tell
you what you want to hear, but rather what he really thinks. He has
been immensely helpful to me, after having tried and given up on
several other internists. (not on HIP)

The best GI person I have consulted so far is Peter Distler - I don't
know what insurance plans he takes, but I know he is sympathetic,
practical, and thorough. 5 east 76th Street, Ny NY 10021
(212-734-3444). (He is on HIP insurance.)

I have had so-so experience with Anthony Weiss at Mt. Sinai (he is more
scientifically than practically inclined, though he was helpful to me
in a time of crisis) and one bad experience with a Charles Gerson - a
nice enough man who told me I was "seeing too many doctors"… whatever
that means. He implied that I was exaggerating and that I did not have
the symptoms I have. I always love that one.

Very “thorough” gastro doctor in Brooklyn – Lester Saliven MD – 186
Joralemon Street, 8th Floor, Brooklyn, NY 11201 (718-834-2050) (NOT
on HIP insurance)

Also VERY highly recommended: Dr. Samuel Rafalin, MD – OB/GYN,
Westside Women’s Medical, 1841 Broadway, NY NY 10023 (212-333-5000)
(yes - accepts HIP insurance)

Happy New Year to all -
Kathleen
