One of my symptoms when I ingest gluten is muscle spasms and pain.  I
suffer from fibromyalgia (muscle spasms and pain), which is a symptom of
chronic fatugue but it is aggravated by gluten ingestion.  (the details
are too long for this short note).  The answer to my prayers was
magnesium.  I read that magnesium malate was the form that would help
the most but I think plain magnesium with a little b-6 for assimilation,
works great.  Supposedly, in fibromyalgia, the cellular mitochondria
don't respirate properly and toxins get built up inside.  Magnesium,
helps the burning of oxygen inside the cells and the toxins are cleaned
up.  Also, since magnesium is a laxative, it helps cleanse the bowel.
(though you might feel that is already happening)  The cause of your
spasms might be that you are losing the minerals in your body when you
eat gluten and have the intestinal symptoms (I don't want to get more
specific in mixed company).  Minerals, especially calcium and magnesium,
are vital for muscle relaxing and contracting, as well as many, many
other functions.  They are also quickly lost during any "cleansing
process" such as occurs during illness.  Many people with heart attacks
have been saved in emergency rooms with intravaneous magnesium
supplementation.  This is because the heart is a muscle and needs
magnesium to relax as well.  I could go on about the wonders of
magnesium.... but I won't, except to say that, when I have accidentally
ingested gluten I take 400mg capsules of magnesium 3 or 4 times a day.
It really helps.
